Creating a sustainable SAM model

Many SAM programmes that have early success, fail long-term due to missing one of the most fundamental parts of Software Asset Management.

The latest update to the ITAM ISO 19770-1:2017, released in December, is helping in a big way to address this, by providing a great framework in its management standard for how to create a successful, governance based approach to ITAM.

In the picture attached we have adapted the new ISO's view of the 3 tier guide for ITAM, with a view of how we believe this should be used for SAM.

SAM projects fail long term by skipping Tier 2 and jumping right to Tier 3 after collecting data at the outset. This sets up failure as whilst they might fix a non-compliance issue or create savings on renewals, without the governance created over new software deployments in tier 2, the root cause of the problem is never dealt with, leading to the problems reoccurring.

If you have yet to pick up a copy of the guide, it does a great job at helping you to plan and understand requirements for an ITAM programme in a concise way. You can purchase a copy here: iso.org/standard/68531.html
