SAM Programme planning - Template for success

When planning a software asset management programme its important to understand the scope of work being undertaken.

The two underpinning fundamentals are of course the governance to the programme, what is the goal and the scope of the programme? To be audit ready? Save money? Who is going to manage this and deliver it into the organisation? The second is funding, how will this be paid for.

The programmes work can be split into 3 sections, People, Process and Technology.

People - Will you have an in house term? Off shore? 3rd Party? Is the team in place to day capable of delivering the longer term strategy being positioned by the project? What training do they need? What training do you stakeholders and users need?

Process - How are you going to pick the technology, through a tender? Will you review against best practice such as ISO 19770-1? How will the new technology and process fit into your organisation? How will you track success? How will you implement control over the wider software lifecycle?

Technology - What is the scope of your SAM programme? Is it desktop only? Does it included all servers? What about SaaS applications and Cloud infrastructure? Will you integrate with systems in your environment such as the CMDB?

Using the attached picture as a template for approaching your SAM programme is a great way to get a head start.
